MARíA DEL MILAGRO VARELA LINGUA (MILA) is a woman, mother, visual artist, dental hygienist, animal lover. She and her baby boy were victims of institutional violence in Valencia, Spain. Her baby boy was kidnapped seconds after birth in March of 2020; meanwhile, Mila was physically tortured. The baby boy was living without his real family until he became 6 months old. In that period of time, Mila was also abused psychologically. Little after she got her son back, she had to flee Spain with her baby boy due to threats. “Bañada En Lágrimas” 2021 – watercolors

Este cuadro representa las lágrimas que llora una mamá cuando le roban un hijo, tantas lágrimas que se convirtieron en un velo de agua, desesperación que nadie entiende, lágrimas que nadie más puede sentir, lágrimas que son viscerales. Romantizar a través del arte una tristeza tan grande es intentar superarlo, es como una terapia, pero no quiero que la gente se enamore de ese dolor. ¿Suena estúpido?
Translation: This painting represents the tears that a mother cries when a child is stolen from her, so many tears that they become a veil of water, desperation that no one understands, tears that no one else can feel, tears that are visceral. To romanticize such great sadness through art is to try to overcome it. It's like therapy, but I don't want people to fall in love with that pain. Does it sound stupid?
“Mi Parto Robado” 2021 - watercolors

Esta pintura simboliza mi parto robado, un sufrimiento que se convirtió durante seis meses en la unión con mi hijo, la tetera simboliza mis pechos llenos de leche que no pude darle, el caracol es una referencia a “Úrsula” de la película de la sirenita porque nos convertimos en “pobres almas en desgracia” y los implicados en esto son lo más parecido a ese ser maligno. Las piernas están cerradas y sangrando ya que tuve un parto por cesárea forzada. El cabello está lleno de lágrimas, un mar de lágrimas, y mi hijo está protegido por mi sangre que es su sangre hecha burbujas. El cordón umbilical es a su vez un hilo rojo que nos une para siempre, un cordón que los implicados quisieron enredar, el útero de color negro simboliza una oscuridad protectora y a su vez un vacío visceral al no tenerlo conmigo.
Translation: This painting symbolizes my stolen birth, suffering that came for six months, the union with my son. The teapot symbolizes my breasts full of milk that I could not give him. The snail is a reference to "Ursula" from The Little Mermaid movie because we became "poor unfortunate souls" and those involved in this are the closest thing to that evil being. The legs are closed and bleeding since I was forced into a cesarean delivery. The hair is full of tears, a sea of tears, and my son is protected by my blood, which is his blood in bubbles. The umbilical cord is, in turn, a red thread that unites us forever, a cord that those involved wanted to entangle. The black uterus symbolizes protective darkness, and, in turn, a visceral emptiness by not having Him with me.

Esta obra es explicita y polémica. Creo que en la cultura americana por un lado existe un imaginario colectivo del superhéroe o la superheroína que hace justicia cuando no le dejan otra opción, en este caso mi alter ego es una madre que amenaza con matar a sus torturadores si vuelven a dañar a su hijo. La estética de esta obra tiene mucho del comic norteamericano por esa misma razón, porque ella existe de alguna manera en ese imaginario colectivo, en una realidad paralela. Personalmente llegué a pensar en que si me obligaban a volver a sufrir lo que ya me habían hecho sufrir ya no hubiera podido ser pacífica. En esta obra me saco de encima esos pensamientos, es una manera de hacer paz con ese monstruo que no permití que nadie alimentara. Gracias a Dios pude huir con mi hijo fuera de España y evitar un nuevo secuestro por parte de SSSS.
Por último, quisiera hablar sobre una realidad en EEUU y es que existen muchas personas víctimas de diferentes situaciones dolorosas e injustas que llegan a extremos de querer matar a culpables e incluso a inocentes en su búsqueda de hacer justicia por mano propia porque el sistema les está fallando. A todas esas personas quiero decirles como madre, como mujer y como superviviente que pidan ayuda, que no permanezcan en la opresión, que busquen soluciones pacíficas, que no permitan que nadie ni nada alimente el “lobo” malo.
Translation:
This artwork is explicit and controversial. I think that in American culture, there exists, on one side, a collective imagination of a superhero or superheroine who seeks justice when left with no other option. In this case, my alter ego is a mother who threatens to kill her torturers if they harm her son again. The aesthetic of this work has a lot of that American comic for that very reason, because she somehow exists in that collective imagination, in a parallel reality. I personally came to think that if they forced me to suffer through what I had already suffered, I would not have been peaceful. In this work, I get rid of those thoughts. It is a way to make peace with that monster that I didn’t allow anyone to feed. Thank God I was able to run away with my son out of Spain and avoid a new kidnapping by the SSSS.
Finally, I would like to talk about reality in the USA, and that’s that there are many
victims of different painful and unfair situations that reach extremes of wanting to
kill those who are guilty, and even the innocent, in their quest to take justice into their own hands because the system has failed them. To all those people, I want to say as a mother, as a woman, and as a survivor to ask for help, do not remain in oppression,
seek peaceful solutions. Do not allow anyone or anything to feed the bad “wolf.”

Los SSSS obtienen 68 mil euros en subvenciones cada vez que secuestran a un menor de edad por el solo hecho de arrancarlo de su familia biológica, posteriormente siguen cobrando unos 5 mil euros aproximadamente por mes hasta que cumple 18 años. Este dinero lo consiguen tanto cuando internan a los menores en un centro como cuando los dan en adopción de manera irregular a alguna familia sustituta. En el caso de que algún menor sea devuelto a su familia real, si vuelven a secuestrarlo vuelven a recibir 68 mil euros y 5 mil por mes hasta los 18 años.
Los funcionarios de SSSS arrancan de sus familias biológicas y reales a bebés, niños y niñas para darlos en adopción de manera irregular (falsificando documentos afiliatorios como el cambiarles los nombres o apellidos, inventando informes de manera totalmente subjetiva, torturando física y psicológicamente a los progenitores). Toda esta falsificación documental redactada y recopilada por simples trabajadores sociales (en su gran mayoría mujeres) es llevada a cabo en el nombre del Bienestar Superior del Menor.
Siempre roban menores de edad en contra de la voluntad de sus madres y padres, tal cual se hacía durante la última dictadura franquista. Lo más peligroso de todo esto es que durante dicha dictadura robarle a alguien un hijo o hija era un delito, (aunque evidentemente nadie iba a la cárcel por dicho crimen).
Hoy en día robarle un hijo o hija a una familia es una práctica legalizada y firmemente apoyada por el Estado. De hecho, es toda una industria que genera muchísimos puestos de trabajo, para decirlo de otra manera quien trabaja en Protección del Menor y no secuestra menores no tiene nada que hacer en su horario laboral. Esta obra se trata de la cabeza de una virgen negra (ya que según algunos políticos circula una leyenda negra de que España nunca salió de la Transición, es decir que el dictador sigue vivo de alguna manera). Según mi criterio, un país que ha encontrado un mecanismo pseudo legal para seguir robando bebés, niños y niñas como cuando vivía Francisco Franco no ha salido nunca de la Transición de la Dictadura hacia la Democracia. A menos que Democracia (entendido como lo que quiere la mayoría de los ciudadanos) signifique pisar los Derechos Humanos Básicos de las personas para satisfacer las necesidades perversas de otras. Esta práctica tan inhumana es apoyada tanto por partidos políticos de derechas como de izquierdas. Se roban menores sin juicio previo condenatorio, sin documentación objetiva acreditada por especialistas forenses, una familia a la que le roban un hijo o hija es culpable hasta que demuestren lo contrario, no existe la presunción de inocencia, de hecho, esas familias, esos menores tienen menos derechos que los criminales encarcelados por crimines probados.
En Valencia se realizan ofrendas de flores durante las Festividades de Fallas (que tienen lugar en marzo de cada año), a la Virgen de los Desamparados, es decir a la Virgen que protege a los menores robados por el Estado, esta obra está inspirada en esa Virgen, por ello lleva flores como cabello y en sus ojos. Casualmente, la palabra Fallas significa “errores” y cuando te roban un hijo te entregan un papel que se llama “Orden de Desamparo”.
Translation:
The SSSS obtain 68 thousand Euros in subsidies every time they kidnap a minor for the sole fact of tearing him from his biological family; later, they continue obtaining approximately 5 thousand euros per month until he turns 18. They get this money both when they intern the minors in a center and when they give up the child for adoption to a foster family. In the event that any minor is returned to his birth family, if they kidnap him again, they receive 68 thousand Euros again and 5 thousand per month until 18.
SSSS officials tear away babies, boys, and girls from their biological and real families to give them up for adoption in an irregular way (falsifying affiliation documents such as changing their names or surnames, inventing reports in a totally subjective way, physically and psychologically torturing the parents). All of these fake documents are written and compiled by social workers (mostly women) is carried out in the name of the Superior Welfare of the Minor.
They always steal minors against the will of their mothers and fathers, just like it was done during the last Franco dictatorship. The most dangerous thing about all this is that during that dictatorship, stealing someone's son or daughter was a crime, (although obviously, no one went to jail for that crime).
Nowadays stealing a son or a daughter from a family is a legalized practice and firmly supported by the state. In fact, it is an entire industry that generates many jobs, to put it another way, those who work in Child Protection and don’t abduct minors have nothing to do during their working hours. This artwork is about the head of a black virgin (since according to some politicians there is a black legend that says that Spain never left the Transition, that is to say that the dictator is still alive somehow). In my opinion, a country that has found a legal mechanism to continue stealing babies, boys and girls, like when Francisco Franco lived, has never Transitioned from Dictatorship to Democracy. Unless Democracy (understood as what the majority of citizens want) means treading on the Basic Human Rights of people in order to meet the wicked needs of others. This inhumane practice is supported by both right and left political parties. Minors are stolen without prior conviction, without objective documentation accredited by forensic specialists, a family whose son or daughter gets kidnapped is guilty until proven otherwise, there is no presumption of innocence, in fact, these families, these minors have fewer rights than criminals incarcerated for proven crimes. In Valencia, flower offerings are made during the Fallas Festivities (which take place in March of each year), to the Virgen de los Desamparados, that is, to the Virgin who protects abandoned people. But its means in praxis minors stolen by the State, this artwork is inspired by that Virgin, for she wears flowers as hair and in her eyes. Coincidentally, the word Fallas means "mistakes" and when a child is stolen they give you a paper called "Order of Abandonment".
